This project, which began as the winning entry in an AIA design competition, carefully sits on the edge of a neighborhood between small wood-framed houses and larger masonry commercial buildings in Denver's Five Points neighborhood. The project borrows its scale, massing and materials from the surrounding buildings and makes a new building that incorporates both disparate building types. Located half a block from a new light rail station, the project brings an increased density and solidity to the street. The building consists of 5 market rate and 3 low income units including a handicap accessible unit and 8 enclosed parking spaces, all on the space of a former single family house. Utilizing a significant amount of green building technologies and products, these units are extremely energy and resource efficient. Designed for the Northeast Denver Housing Center, the building balances issues of scale, openness, security and massing into a newly re-developing section of the city.
