The public spaces and stores of an existing retail center were increased five-fold to include an additional 200,000 square feet of retail space and three anchor stores. This open-air mall was designed with large overhanging canopies on each side to protect from the sun and rain and a sinuous watercourse in the center. Instead of simply creating a continuous, repeating series of canopies, the project was conceived as a series of outdoor rooms with crossing bridges. Each "room" was treated as a variation on the basic theme to define place and orientation.
